Living for many years in Rotterdam and never been to the source of the Rotte. Damn.
Time to change that.
|
| A warm and sunny start of the expedition. The river changed its name about a km back from "Stokviswater" (wtf?) to "The Rotte".
This expedition is not captured by my phone cam by the way. |
| The Rotte just crossed the Noorderkanaal, if you can say that. Went through the other river? Shared watery space? |
| I see 4 different water levels. Small 'siderivers' run along almost all the way. Actually there are at least? 6 levels in 2 km across - Bergse Achter/Voor Plas, Rotte, sideriver, nameless puddle?, Kralingse Plas.

| See how the ugly little building magically disappears in the typical Dutch landscape ;) |
| Ah, those curves :) Speeding along, you feel the flow of the river. |
| Looking back. Those impressive clouds would soon disappear. |
| Shame you can't see the height differences in a photo very well. The Rotte 'floats' 6 meters above the land, that sunk because it is peatland. End history lesson. Interesting though. |
| Bicycle heaven. |
| The blue water of the Rottemeren. Not actually blue, more brown it is. |
| Wonderful light here. Also notice the menacing branch reaching out to your path. |
| About wonderful light: went back a km to capture this golden light. |
| Getting closer. A shame that most of the time you can't see the Rotte as the bike path is lower or vegetation gets in the way. |
| And closer. Good to see they are working on it but it looks very dodgy and not very reassuring that this flimsy half broken dyke can hold the water.
The Rotte emptied itself in the lowlands in 1833 when a dyke broke... |
| There it is! The Source of the Rotte! Expedition successful. Tears of joy blur my vision.
No not really, but it does feel special to be at something so small and humble that is the beginning of so much history. |

| There it goes. |

| Here I sat down to have dinner and watch the sun set.
Very clear to see how much the land has sunk from here. |
| Hmmm... |
|
|
| On my way back home to the city that was caused by these humble beginnings. |

| A sweet farewell from the Rotte to conclude this epic expedition.
OK back to normal now. |
